Back when I played Quake/CounterStrike everyone was addressed by their handle, and not their given name. It's also pretty prevalent in hacker culture.

/agree with Aven. Not that strange. There are still quite a few people here at school who call me Zero. It's not a nickname to them, it's my name.

edit: I'm pretty sure at least one doesn't know my real name either.
